If you’re a perfectionist like me…
…losing weight to achieve the “perfect” body sounds seductive.
You’re likely to lose weight and feel accomplished and virtuous when dieting. Your mood improves, and you feel like you have control of your life and health. Compliments from friends, family, and healthcare providers roll in regularly.
But then, in days, weeks, or months, the control you feel slips away, and you start eating those restricted foods. As your weight creeps back up, you wonder why you can’t maintain this diet because you know people out there have succeeded.
The question you (understandably) ask yourself is, “What’s wrong with me?” The answer in two short words: Absolutely nothing! Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with ME?” my goal is to challenge yourself and others to ask, “What’s wrong with diets?”
Diets are *literally* the worst.
Let me help you understand why.
Have you heard the statistic that 95% of people who go on a diet gain back all the weight they lost and sometimes more? It’s true, and decades of research support this. And yet, diets are still being sold to so many – especially individuals living in larger bodies.
Dieting techniques rely on psychological and physical deprivation, the opposite of our body’s design, which is to keep us alive! They slow your metabolism and predictably cause weight cycling and regain.
Have you heard that losing “just 5%” of your body weight can reverse high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and pre-diabetes? Let me be the first to tell you that you’re not getting the whole story.
It can be overwhelming, frustrating, and confusing to hear the latest trends about what to eat for weight management and the pursuit of “health.”
Quiet the dieting mindset.
In our work together, you’ll learn how the popular narrative around weight and health keeps you stuck in disappointment, self-doubt, and body dissatisfaction, causing you to return to dieting repeatedly.
We’ll explore where this health and weight narrative has historically shown up in your life and how it shows up in your personal body story. There will be plenty of time for screaming into pillows and smashing that pesky scale to bits!
As you start to quiet your dieting mind, you’ll begin to identify your body’s innate physical and psychological needs. You’ll find that eating what satisfies you when you are hungry is the missing puzzle piece to developing an easy relationship with food. You’ll feel content after eating and won’t be left craving more. You’ll experience the art of intuitive eating.
But what if you don’t know when you’re hungry or full? What if eating what you want leads to more weight gain? What if you feel worse about your body as you heal your relationship with food?
Facing those fears and doubts alone is scary and valid.
Overcoming those fears works best with support and guidance from a nutrition therapist who gets it.
